READING NATION We love our books By Isabel Hayes
Australia is a nation of bookworms, with 85 percent of the population sitting down for a good read in their spare time every week.
They may be threatened by computer games and the great outdoors, but it seems that “old fashioned” books are still one of the most popular pursuits.
Research into Australian reading habits has revealed that 93 percent of NSW residents read for pleasure every month, while 47 percent of the population picks up a book every single day.
Australians are buying books in their millions each year. And while sixty three per cent of Australians visit bookshops regularly, just 35 per cent visit a library every month.
